Don Imus?

My husband says that all who have watched and listened are also part of the problem of Don Imus. And gives the impression that this makes his statements somehow more understandable, and, perhaps, okay.

Chris Barnes, of the News of Delaware County begins his article with, “First off, yes - Don Imus’ comments toward the Rutgers University women’s basketball team were stupid, pointless, offensive, disgusting and embarrassing. But enough already. In fact, it’s more than enough.”

And ends with this “We are not born racist. It’s a learned trait taught by those who want to, for whatever reason, keep the hate alive. Sometimes I believe it would slowly die a much-deserved death if those who are trying to abolish it would just stop thrusting it into the spotlight.”

Chris seems to be pursuing the “Ignore it and it will go away, get better…” school of thought. Chris seems to feel that the discussion of whether or not this particular bit of rascist, anti-feminism should have been enough to cause the firing of Don Imus, is just adding to racial hatred. I don’t know if it will add to racial hatred or not, but ignoring Don Imus and his legions of imitators does not solve the problem.

And the problem is that we have the language capable of making racial and sexual slurs. My husband and I in discussing this, tried to come up with inflamatory language which would have similiarly described a group of white women athletes, or even of white women prostitutes - and we couldn’t. We are Norwegian americans, and I know that when my great-great grandparents first came to the midwest they suffered some discrimination - “dirty norskys, and what is that horrible smell from that lutefisk they make?”. And there were probably remarks made about Norwegian women - but we don’t have those words, we can’t dredge them up. We could call a group of white women collegiate athletes - “honkey cracker street trash round heels” - does it make you mad? Do you think that Don Imus would have made that remark about the North Dakota University women’s baseball team? My husband thinks that Don would not have said that about the North Dakota women’s baseball team because its not funny?!?

Whats the deal with Jason Bartlett this spring?

The Twins young catcher had been a decent bat and a good fielder. But already this season he has committed 3 errors (which is the most that any short stop in the majors has, but he does have company) and his average is an appalling .056. He has just 1 hit in 18 at bats with 5 strike outs. If he could reverse those numbers we'd have something to talk about. Something is not right with this young man this spring. Here's hoping he gets that certain something working for him again.
